The first Varjokirjamessut was held in 2010 at Rauhanasema as a one-day event. The event was extended to two days in 2015. Since 2021, the Varjokirjamessut has been organised across various venues in Pasila, although the book sales themselves have taken place at Rauhanasema every year. The 2026 Varjokirjamessut will be the seventeenth edition.
