Shadow Bookfair 23.-25.10.2026
Welcome to the Helsinki Varjokirjamessut (Shadow Book Fair) in Pasila in October! Varjokirjamessut is an alternative literary event that explores a wide range of social and political issues, including antifascism, antimilitarism, anarchism, climate and environmental issues, animal rights, DIY culture, feminism, antiracism, and queer topics.
Varjokirjamessut was first organized in the year 2010 as a one day affair at Rauhanasema. The book fair transformed into a weekend long, two-day event in 2015. Since 2021 Varjokirjamessut has been organized in two or more venues concurrently even though the actual book fair with the exhibitors has always been at Rauhanasema. The 2026 Varjokirjamessut will be the literary festival’s 17th iteration.
This year, we are delighted to present Varjokirjamessut as a three-day event from Friday to Sunday, 23–25 October 2026. The main venue is Rauhanasema (Veturitori 3), with additional programming taking place at Pasila Library (Kellosilta 9) as well as, and for the first time, at Naapuruustalo Pasila (Topparikuja 2).
The exhibitors’ tables are located at Rauhanasema, where you’ll find a diverse selection of books, comics, zines, artworks, and pamphlets. Panel discussions, talks, and other events will be organized at Pasila Library and Naapuruustalo Pasila.
The book fair features dozens of authors, researchers, and artists whose work engages with the themes mentioned above. The programme offers wide-ranging discussions on literature, culture, and politics. Alongside traditional book presentations and author interviews, this year’s programme also includes workshops and performances.
Visitors can also stop by Café Fredrika, a volunteer-run café at Rauhanasema serving delicious vegan food and treats. All proceeds support the café’s activities, the hosting association, and peace work.
The event is organized by the Varjokirjamessut working group in collaboration with Aseistakieltäytyjäliitto (the Union of Conscientious Objectors). The fair is free of charge and run entirely by volunteers. Its aim is to create space for grassroots initiatives and activism while sustaining a tradition of anti-authoritarian gathering.
